Zebra Technologies just announced the release of the
ZD500R, an RFID printer that is ideal for asset tracking and item-level tagging. This new addition is part of their
IoT (Internet of Things) solution offering and is the industry's first desktop ultra high frequency (UHF) RFID printer.
In a news release dated November 12, 2013, Zebra states that, "The ZD500R features UHF RFID encoding capabilities that are ideal for applications such as in-store retail item tagging in addition to asset tracking in manufacturing, government, healthcare, and hospitality." It also says that this easy-to-use printer is perfect for environments where technical support is limited.
The ZD500R is an easy-to-use RFID printer that is ideal for asset tracking and item-level tagging.
"The ZD500R takes the complex process of producing a highly advanced tag and makes it simpler for a non-technical user," explains Keith LeFebvre, vice president of product marketing and management, Zebra Technologies. "We created the ZD500R to address the growing demand for UHF encoded tags. This innovative addition to our leading line of RFID printers allows both Zebra and our customers to be more competitive."
Features and benefits
Zebra credits the ZD500R's built-in, chip-based serialization functionality with the printer's ability to provide "a simple, yet highly accurate and reliable method of printing and encoding a serialized electronic product code (EPC) tag." This capability enables organizations such as manufacturers to "reduce costs by eliminating the infrastructure and services previously required to manage item-level serial numbers." It also allows retailers--and others--to improve inventory accuracy.
Other benefits highlighted by Zebra include:
- Saves space - Because of its compact size, the ZD500R is perfect for places where space is limited.
- Eliminates training - An intuitive interface makes this printer easy to use, which also eliminates the need for training.
- Uses variety of media - This printer works with a variety of media, including labels and tags that print, peel, and cut.
- Reduces costs - With an inlay pitch of 16 mm, this printer minimizes waste, which reduces media costs.
The ZD500R can be easily integrated and managed from any location using Zebra's Link-OS environment, which also allows users to tap into compatible devices such as Smartphones.

To explain why item-level RFID is quickly becoming an important solution for enterprises eager to improve asset tracking, Zebra published a white paper called, "
Drive Value Across Your Supply Chain with Chip-based RFID Serialization." It dives into the benefits of implementing this technology, which includes the ability to easily integrate it without incurring massive, multi-year IT deployments.
